Obiiwa - the holy rock

Posted by
Stu (From Scotland | Working in Kyoto, Japan) on 4 January 2023 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

Obiiwa is a rock brought onto land by the great tsunami of 1771, during the Meiwa era.

It was the world heaviest rock until 2010 and is a place for local beliefs. People come to pray at the sacred rock for luck when fishing, and for the safety of fishermen and their families.

Un lieu de culte impressionnant ! Pourquoi dis-tu ; "C'était la roche la plus lourde du monde jusqu'en 2010" ? J'ai cherché sur Internet mais je n'ai rien trouvé
Bonne journée Stu

@Maryse: Thanks Maryse, a website about Miyakojima claimed that until 2010, this rock was believed to be the heaviest in the world. Unfortunately I couldn't find any information on how heavy it is.

A very beautiful image...and a nice narration too. I am sure the rock brings a lot of luck to the fisher folk."

That had to be an incredible force to bring this huge rock ashore! Excellent framing adjacent to the Torii, marking its sacredness.
