The structure on the right looks like one of those buildings they used to have in the background on platform games for Megadrive, ala Sonic. It's so artificial and boxy - making the juxtaposition with the blue mountains in the background very powerful. Really like how you can just see the tops of the antennas from the buildings in the neighbourhood on the left of frame.

Ali-G from Ottawa, Canada

Very cool Stu - what is the building?

16 Mar 2007 12:35pm

@Ali-G: Thanks mate! It's the back of Kyoto station. Went there on Monday and got about 4 posts for my effort. I never have that kind of success rate! Usually about 1 in 20 shots are postable but the station is incredibly unique with a very individual and, some would say, eccentric architectural style. It really divided opinions here in Kyoto when it was completed as it was so out of synch with the rest of the city. Having said that, it's alot more interesting than the hideous monstrosity that is Kyoto Tower.
Thanks for the visit mate and apologies for rambling!

I feel cheated! What are those spindly poles - masts? A suggestion of something often gives an idea of the whole, but too little of something is frustrating! Perhaps a shot taken lower to catch just the orange flush against the harsh vertical line of the building right and more of the - whatever they are - in silhouette perhaps.

@Sidonie: Yeah you might be right there, Sidonie. I didn't really notice them when I took the shot.

I really like this for all the reasons above. Strong composition and great image with the colourless building agianst the beautiful colours and scenery. Nice one.

@Zach Siebert: Thanks Zach. Actually, I think they found me mate! Wasn't looking for anything in particular and just saw this scene.
